Gibraltar History
In 1844, John Rodney Brinkle, grandnephew of Delaware patriot Caesar Rodney, built this Brandywine granite home, named Gibraltar, for the high, rocky prominence on which it still stands today.
In 1909, Hugh Rodney Sharp, Delaware’s foremost preservationist, and his wife Isabella Mathieu DuPont Sharp purchased Gibraltar. Over the next few years they significantly expanded the six-acre estate. They extensively renovated and added to the mansion and had the formal gardens installed. Hugh Rodney Sharp was very influential in the preservation of many other historical sites in Delaware. Gibraltar was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1998. |
